Food and Blood Donation Drive
In line with our school’s continued efforts to provide opportunities for our students to serve the community, the QTSS Food and Blood Donation Drive was successfully completed on 8 July 2017. This is our school’s inaugural Food Drive and 2nd Blood Drive.
Our objectives are:
- To provide staff and students with the opportunity to serve the community and do our part in contributing to the national blood programme and food re-distribution programme through partnerships with external organisations.
- To raise awareness of the impact of blood donation on the donors and its recipients, and provide a platform for our students to advocate the importance of blood donation and food re-distribution (in line with social sustainability and social care).
Leading up to the actual day, the students and teachers conducted a series of publicity exercises around Commonwealth, Stirling and Strathmore areas, involving house-to-house flyer distribution and putting up of posters in the lift lobbies.
Food Donation Drive
For the Food Drive, we collaborated with Food from the Heart (FFTH), where students and teachers carried out house-to-house collection of non-perishable food donations in the Queenstown area. Following that, the donated food items were sorted and packed before the re-distribution to needy families by FFTH. Undeniably, while it involved a great deal of hard work and coordination, it was an authentic and meaningful experience for the student and staff volunteers, with lessons on caring, sharing and the importance of food sustainability and re-distribution, aligned with our school’s Applied Learning Programme (ALP).
Blood Donation Drive
For the Blood Drive, we collaborated with Singapore Red Cross, and arranged for the medical set-up by the Health Science Authority (HSA) team. Considering it is our 2nd Blood Drive, the increased number of donors, including residents, current students, ex-students and teachers, who turned up on 8 July, was very encouraging. Through the event, the volunteers and donors have truly demonstrated the values of care and service. Indeed, Queenstownians ‘dare to serve’!
Such an encouraging outcome is made possible with the combined efforts of the various groups and organisations. The kind support and participation from within our school community is fundamental and greatly appreciated. Likewise, the publicity support from Queenstown Community Centre (People’s Association), Strathmore Avenue Zone RC, Delta RC, Dawson RC and Tanjong Pagar Town Council is essential, so that the event could proceed smoothly.
Last but definitely not least, many, many thanks to all staff and parent volunteers, student helpers and all food and blood donors for your time, effort and support for Food and Blood Donation Drive 2017!
